South fence: project update #2

There has been a great deal of progress on the South fence project

  1. Remove tiger grass behind front porch
  2. Screen front porch
  3. Plant Plumeria pudica along front porch
  4. Remove remaining tiger grass
  5. Screen back deck length
  6. Plant fruit trees
  7. Prep ground for garden shed
  8. Put down slab
  9. Erect garden shed
  10. Pave/surface area around garden shed

The rest of the tiger grass is now gone, Rob having cut it down by hand over time. A man with a stump-grinder was employed to churn up the roots, and then I leveled the strip of soil as best I could.

The existing soil had mulched tiger grass through it and was lightly moist, with a sandy loam texture. As the tiger grass died and regrew in cycles, it fed the soil with plenty of organic matter, though lacking diversity. I added a mix of homemade compost, chook poo compost, and leftover potting mix to hopefully inoculate the soil with additional microbes. Several handfuls of mineral dust were sprinkled in as well for good measure.

Compost ready to be lightly mixed and watered in. Also pictured, bamboo screening from neighbours.

Also, a change in plan to the bamboo screen shaded area for indoor plants along the front porch next to the plumerias... indoor plants now being trialed in a courtyard microclimate.
