Native verge garden: project
There is a trend in North America where people replace their lawns with native flowers and grasses. It's much better for the environment than the monoculture of lawn. The native plants feed the local wildlife, are better adapted to the local environment and therefore, need less water and are more robust against pest and disease. When the flowers are in bloom, it's also very pretty, but otherwise is at risk of looking weedy.
I'm trying my hand at "re-meadowing" here in subtropical Australia. I plan to introduce, little by little, native grasses, low shrubs and groundcovers on my nature strip (verge) to provide pollen, nectar and berries for insects and birds.
So far, I have two different Dianella, and a small Westringia. Because the spot faces West and is under a large Melaleuca tree, it is in shade all day but for the hottest part of the afternoon. This makes it tricky to find plants that can tolerate harsh sun as well as lots of shade.
For now, let's see how these go!
